K. Thomas's Story
Life
After graduating Neshoba Central in 1988 I enlisted in the Navy. Attended Recruit Training in Great Lakes, Il. My first duty stations was Naval Station, Port Operations Department in Norfolk, VA. In 1990 I reported aboard my first ship, USS Saipan (LHA-2) Norfolk, VA, were I made two six month deployments to the Med and Persian Gulf. In 1995 I reported to USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41), homeported at Little Creek Amphib Base, Norfolk, VA were I made a Persain Gulf and S. American Deployment. Returned to Mississippi in 1997 to Naval Station Pascagoula, upon completion of my shore tour I reported to USS Supply (AOE 6) Earle, New Jersey in 2000 completing on Persian Gulf deployment. Following I reported to USS Nimitz (CVN 68) San Diego, CA in 2001 assisting in re-out fitting and refueling. In 2002 I tranferred to USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), homeported in Norfolk, VA were we deployed in support of Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. In November 2003 I recieved a commission under the Navy LDO/CWO program. Attended Officers LDO/CWO school in Pensacola, FL. orted to Assault Craft Unit Four, Norfolk, VA as Detachment Six Officer-in-Charge and deployed with USS BATAAN. July 2007 I reported to my current command, USS OAK HILL as the Ship's Bos'n. My Son and I make our home in Newport News, VA.
Military
Currently serving as the Ship's Bos'n onboard USS OAK HILL (LSD 51) at NAB Little Creek, Norfolk, VA. Past commands include. Naval Station Norfolk, Port Operations; USS Saipain (LHA-2) Norfolk, VA; USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41) Little Creek, VA; Naval Station Pascagoula, MS; USS Supply (AOE-6) Earle, NJ; USS Nimitz (CVN-68), San Diego, and USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), home-ported in Norfolk, VA. I've been on active duty since November 1988 and have have deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Desert Sheild/Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom from January 03 to July 03. I recieved my commission to the rank of Ensign in November 03 under the Navy's Limited Duty Officer program that allows enlisted to earn a commission. My first command as an officer was in Korea as the Port Operations Officer for Commander, Fleet Activities, Chinhae. Afterward I was OIC of Det Six at Assualt Craft Unit Four were I deployed on board USS Bataan (LHD-5) in support of OIF.
